A Study on the Attitude of Nursing Profession


Abstract
The concept and role of nursing is changing from functional or subsidiary role to professional. The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental data of nursing education that lead to enhance professionalism. The data used in this paper is collected from nursing students of C university in K city and nurses of Hospital of C university.
The results of this professional attitude study are as follows;
1. Mean scores of means are 3.64 (students), 3.68 (nurses), respectively. (cf. maximum mean score of means is 5)
2. The sub-category mean scores of professional attitude are professional education 4.31, theoretical system 3.95, social identity 3.91, professional ethic 3.79, and autonomy 2.90 in order. In sub-category of autonomy, the difference between student¢¥s score and nurses¢¥ is statistically significant (students 2.80; nurses 2.99; p < .05). But others are not significant.
3. Among all items, three items of higher score are as follows in order.
1) "Society needs to be convinced that the concept of nursing is changing" (students 4.61; nurses 4.39; total 4.50).
2) "Continuing education is necessary within a recognized profession" (students 4.49; nurses 4.46; total 4.48).
3) "A national set of standards to guide nursing practice should be developed" (students 4.29; nurses 4.46; total 4.38) and three items of lower score are as follows in order.
1) "Nurses often find themselves impeded by the red tape of unnecessary procedures and external dictates" (students 2.11; nurses 2.33; total 2.22).
2) "Nurses are continuing to be dependent upon physicians for clinical decision making" (students 2.34; nurses 2.92; total 2.63).
3) "Nurses is able to make independent decisions concerning her/his assignment" (students 2.48; nurses 2.95; total 2.72).
4. Professional attitude among nurses by department of work is statistically significant (p < .01), but others are not significant.
